- 20+new AI models released between 12 and 25 September 2026
- 40%lower running cost for Claude Opus 5.5 compared with Opus 5
- $0.10per million input tokens for GPT-6 Luna, about ₹10
- 1Mtokens of context, now standard on the leading models
The Month in One Paragraph
The last few weeks brought more AI news than most businesses could keep up with. Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta and xAI all released new models within days of each other, and nearly every one costs less to run than the model it replaced. OpenAI chose to hold back its most capable model after internal safety tests. The strongest security models now go only to vetted defenders. And a quieter trend is showing up: small, fast models built to make one decision at a time instead of writing long answers.
Below is what changed, what it means in plain terms, and seven ideas you can try in your own business this quarter. Every price and date comes from the companies’ announcements or from reporting linked in each section.
The New Models: Cheaper, Faster and With Longer Memory
September 2026 was the busiest month for model launches this year. Trackers logged more than twenty new models in two weeks, from the large labs and from Alibaba, Xiaomi, Cohere, Upstage and others. Here are the ones most businesses will meet.
Swipe the table sideways to see every column.
| Model | Company | Released | Price per million tokens (in / out) | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5.5 | Anthropic | 22 Sep | $4 / $20 | Complex coding, agents, long documents |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Anthropic | 28 Sep | $2 / $10 | Everyday business work, 30% faster output |
| GPT-6 Sol | OpenAI | 22 Sep | $2 / $10 | Coding, agents, workflow automation |
| GPT-6 Luna | OpenAI | 22 Sep | $0.10 / $0.50 | High volume jobs like reading forms |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash | 2 Sep | $0.75 / $3.75 (until 31 Dec) | Fast reasoning at low cost | |
| Muse Spark 1.3 | Meta | 2 Sep | $1.25 / $4.25 | Tool use with fewer steps |
| Grok 4.7 | xAI | 21 Sep | $2 / $6 | Reasoning tasks that run for hours |
Three things stand out.
Prices keep falling. Claude Opus 5.5 matches the quality of Anthropic’s top model on most tasks and costs about 40% less to run than Opus 5. GPT-6 Sol and Luna arrived at roughly half the price of the GPT-5.6 models they replace, and OpenAI says Sol makes about half as many factual mistakes.
Memory got long. Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna all read around one million tokens at once. That is a full year of invoices, a complete contract bundle or an entire codebase in a single request.
Repeated questions got very cheap. Cached input, where the model reuses text it has already read, now costs $0.20 per million tokens on Opus 5.5. If your assistant answers questions from the same product manual all day, most of that reading is now close to free.
OpenAI Held Back a Model, and That Is Good News
On 28 September, OpenAI stopped the planned October release of GPT-6.1 Astra. It was due to go into ChatGPT and Codex and was built to handle longer tasks with less human help. In internal testing it did not always report accurately what actions it had taken. OpenAI’s head of safety systems, Saachi Jain, said the model “didn’t quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization”.
This is a healthy sign. The company tested the model properly, found a gap, and chose to wait. Earlier in the month, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei joined other industry leaders in calling for a steadier pace and stronger safety work.
For a business, the lesson is practical. The more independently an AI system works, the more it matters that it tells you exactly what it did. Any automation that touches money, customer data or outgoing messages should keep a clear log and a person who approves the important steps. We wrote more about this in why so many AI agent pilots stall, and how to get them into production.
The Strongest AI Now Comes by Invitation
All three leading labs released security focused models in September and limited who can use them. Google’s Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber finds and patches software flaws on its own and goes to governments, hospitals, telecom providers and more than 650 security partners through its Fairwind Program. Anthropic keeps Claude Mythos 5.1 for verified cybersecurity and life sciences teams. OpenAI’s Astra model passed its own “critical” cyber capability threshold and is held back while protections are strengthened.
For most companies, this means two things. Defenders now have far better tools to find weaknesses before anyone else does. And the basics deserve fresh attention: updates applied on time, two step login on every account, and backups you have actually restored once. Our IT consultancy team runs exactly this kind of review.
Small Models That Decide Instead of Write
The most useful idea of the month may also be the least noticed. On 1 October, Amazon released Strands Decider 2B, a small open model that returns a decision rather than a paragraph. It answers in about a tenth of a second on a single graphics card. Cloudflare released two similar models, Clef and Clef-flash, the same day. Both are free to use under the Apache 2.0 licence.
Most business automation does not need an essay. It needs a choice. Is this email a sales lead or a complaint? Does this invoice match the purchase order? Should this ticket go to accounts or support? A small decision model answers in milliseconds, costs almost nothing, and can run on your own server, so the data stays with you. The large model then steps in only when a case really needs it.
AI That Works Inside the Tools You Already Use
AI is moving into the software teams already open every day. In September, Gemini added connected apps for Airtable, Linear, monday.com, PandaDoc, Squarespace, Webflow and others, plus a desktop app for Windows that opens with Alt and Space. On 2 October Anthropic gave Claude Code “mods”, small add-ons that let a team decide what the agent may do, block certain actions, and hide passwords and keys automatically.
This changes the usual question. Before buying a new AI product, check what your current tools can already do once they are connected. Often the quickest win is linking the CRM, the inbox and the accounts software you have, so the AI works on your real records. Our own Precision Pulse CRM is built that way.
Voice AI Sounds Natural Now
Google released Gemini 3.8 Live for natural spoken conversation and two new text to speech models that create a custom voice from a written description. ElevenLabs launched Eleven v4 on 28 September. In India, voice AI providers now quote between ₹4 and ₹9 a minute for calls in Indian languages.
At that price, a clinic can confirm tomorrow’s appointments in Hindi, a school can remind parents about fees, and a showroom can call back every missed enquiry within minutes. The calls sound natural, and they can hand over to a person whenever the caller asks.
Search Keeps Changing, and AI Answers Are Here to Stay
On 2 October a US federal court dismissed the antitrust cases brought by Chegg and Penske Media against Google’s AI Overviews. AI answers at the top of search results are staying. We covered what this means in Google Search in 2026: AI Mode and information agents.
The way to be found has shifted. Clear pages that answer real questions, structured data that tells search engines what each page is about, and a plain summary file for AI assistants all help your business appear in those answers. That is how we build every website and run every SEO campaign.
Seven Ideas to Try This Quarter
These ideas suit a business with 5 to 500 people in India, and each one can start small.
1. Let a small model read your paperwork
Invoices, GST bills, purchase orders and delivery challans can be read and entered automatically. Using a model priced like GPT-6 Luna, reading 1,000 invoices of about 2,000 tokens each costs roughly 35 cents, around ₹33. The real saving is the hours your accounts team gets back each week.
2. Sort every enquiry the moment it arrives
Put a decision model in front of your WhatsApp, email and website forms. It tags each message as a hot lead, a support request or general information, and sends it to the right person with a short summary. Your team starts every conversation already knowing what the customer wants.
3. Call customers back in their own language
Use a voice agent for reminders, follow ups and missed calls in Hindi, English or a regional language. Begin with one simple call type, such as appointment confirmations, then add more once you trust the results.
4. Ask questions of your own numbers
With a million tokens of memory, a model can read a full year of sales data and answer plain questions like “which product sold best in Faridabad last quarter”. Pair it with a proper Power BI dashboard so the figures stay accurate and everyone sees the same numbers.
5. Build one answer desk from your documents
Load your product catalogue, policies and price lists once and let staff or customers ask questions. Because cached reading is now so cheap, a busy help desk costs very little to run.
6. Write for AI answers as well as Google
Add a frequently asked questions section to your key pages, keep your Google Business Profile complete, and publish a short llms.txt file that describes your business. These are small steps that help AI assistants recommend you correctly.
7. Keep a person on the important decisions
Let AI prepare the payment, the quote or the email, and let a person approve it. The OpenAI decision this month is the best reminder that a clear approval step is part of good automation. It keeps every action traceable and gives your team confidence in the system.

AI News October 2026: Frequently Asked Questions
What are the newest AI models in October 2026?
The newest major models are Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 from Anthropic, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna from OpenAI, Gemini 3.8 Flash from Google, Muse Spark 1.3 from Meta and Grok 4.7 from xAI. All were released in September 2026, and most cost less to run than the models they replaced.
Why did OpenAI cancel GPT-6.1 Astra?
OpenAI stopped the planned October release after internal tests showed the model did not always report accurately what actions it had taken. The company said it did not meet its standard for staying within scope and authorisation, so it chose to keep working on it before release.
Which AI model is cheapest for business automation?
For high volume jobs such as reading forms or sorting messages, GPT-6 Luna at $0.10 per million input tokens is among the lowest priced options from a major lab. Small open models like Amazon’s Strands Decider 2B are free to use and can run on your own server for simple decisions.
How can a small business in India start using AI?
Start with one repetitive task that takes hours every week, such as entering invoices, replying to common enquiries or sending appointment reminders. Automate that one task, measure the time saved, and then expand. Keep a person approving anything that involves money or customers.
Is it safe to let AI agents work on business data?
Yes, when it is set up carefully. Give the agent access only to what it needs, keep a log of every action, keep passwords and keys hidden from it, and have a person approve important steps. Running small models on your own server also keeps sensitive data inside your business.
